Nine Lives is a whimsical tale of a small, feisty, somewhat Siamese cat called Bunni, who tells the story of nine cats that all had their turn at supervising two generations of a particularly lucky family of humans. Born in the wild and eking out an existence in the veldt between some factories in South Africa, Bunni describes her trials as a single cat parent, her harrassment by unmannered feral toms, and the challenges she faces in befriending and taming a human family.
We are introduced to a hitherto undisclosed feline culture that includes Lord Tabithat, the god of all cats, and the difficulties he faces administrating the feline afterlife. In Khat Lore we discover the inherited wisdom of countless generation of cats, their tradition and rules, the relationship cats have with their local Khat Khouncile, their means of counting, telling the time, measuring distance, and generally interpreting the man-made world around them.
So well does Bunni supervise her adopted human family, that after she dies, Tabithat sends her back as a Phirish - a spirit cat - to continue the good work she started. We follow the family and their cats through some major adventures, including an overseas relocation to England, where we learn how cats while away their time in quarantine debating the unexplained issues of the universe.
To her great frustration, Bunni is denied her rightful place dozing in the afterlife until she has completed a special assignment for Lord Tabithat. The task seems impossibly daunting at first, but with determination, some help from an unexpected source, and a whole lot of luck, she may just succeed.
