One thing every southern girl knows--if you are lost, your inner compass will point you home. For Lizzie Long, home is the beautiful South Carolina Lowcountry, where a close-knit community welcomes her with open arms and nurtures her spirit after her world implodes.
As Lizzie tries to hit the reset button and put the pieces of her shattered life back together, the magic of the South Carolina coast and the rekindling of childhood friendships help her open her eyes to both the hard truths and amazing possibilities ahead. Having gone through much of her life with blinders on, Lizzie slowly begins to rebuild her spirit and her confidence. But will she open her eyes in time to recognize the one man who has always seen her as the strong, intelligent and loving southern girl that she is?

The Eyes Have It A Lowcountry Home Novel eBook Julie Allan

I liked Lizzie and enjoyed the descriptions of the lowcountry dishes and foods at The Biscuit Box. The book could have benefited from a good edit. I think the author tried a little too hard to inject humor in the story. I found some of the episodes funny; others, not so much. In my opinion, the way Lizzie's friends laughed at the behavior of Lizzie's date, the recovering alcoholic, was offensive. Ideally, he should have told Lizzie before hand that he was a recovering alcoholic, but he didn't. And then at the wine bar, he succumbed to his addiction. In a real-life situation, I wouldn't think that was anything to laugh about. The date with the "divorced" man, whose wife, with kids in tow, confronted him and Lizzie at the restaurant, was more credible. The date who drank beer from his prosthetic leg? Hmmmm. To me, ludicrous.

I would have thought Lizzie would recognize the initials B.E.W. as Bennett's when she signed the lease for her cafe. After all, they were an "item" at one time.

Although the ending was predictable, it still delivered the sweet feeling of a romance novel.

The Eyes Have It A Lowcountry Home Novel eBook Julie Allan Reviews

I loved this sweet southern story about Lizzie Long. I was hooked in the first chapter and had a hard time putting it down. Lizzie is caught in the chaos of life as the book opens. She is back home in Mt. Pleasant SC surrounded by her family and friends. I gravitate to book series because once I meet and get to know the characters I want to know what happens next in their lives. I'm hopeful Julie will continue the story of Lizzie Long in the next 2 books that are waiting for me on my nightstand
So this is book 1 of 3 "low country" romances. ...similar to Dorothy Benton Frank. The characters are fine, the storyline is OK, but the punctuation needs some work!......maybe a better paid editor. But I will take the time to read the next 2 books.
A great beach read that will have you on 'pins and needles' waiting for the sequels! With every page you feel as though you are healing alongside of Lizzie. With her tail tucked between her legs and wanting to leave her misfortunes behind; Lizzie returns to the Low Country. Her aunt, her old friends and her community are not going to allow her to wallow for long--they have high hopes for her! The 'pity-party' does not last for long-- soon she is chasing her dreams! Her love of cooking, her southern style, and her down-to-earth personality will have you longing to be a regular at the Biscuit Box-- enjoying a sweet tea & one of the seasonal specials! I hope that Lizzie's journey is smooth; however, something tells me that not everything is how it appears!
Our introduction to Lizzie reveals a girl who is nearly shattered by a bad relationship, but whose family love and support her. Because of their enduring love, Lizzie rediscovers her strengths and talents and what she loves to do. She builds the courage to follow her dream to start her own business and at the same time, after some rather stunningly awful attempts at dating, rediscovers a love from her past. Thank goodness Bennett is patient and can see that "the eyes have it." This is a delightful first book that makes us glad there will be more about Lizzie. I also wish there really was a Biscuit Box.
The Eyes Have It by Julie Allan is a light and engaging read about the comforts of friendship, family and Southern food. Add in a rekindled romance between 28-year-old Lizzie and her high school boyfriend, Bennett, and the opening of Lizzie's restaurant named The Biscuit Box and you've got the perfect recipe for Southern Chick Lit. Much of the charm of The Eyes Have It and Julie Allan's writing is her attention to local detail. The book is set in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, a coastal town characterized by its harbor view of Charleston, nearby beaches, and bicycling through town. The Eyes Have It is the book you've been looking for to start your summer beach reading collection.
Lizzie is a southern girl after my own heart. She’s genuine and vulnerable, yet strong and proud. After her marriage falls apart she heads home to sort out her life. Along the way she rediscovers the strength of true friendships, the wisdom and grace of family and the determination to follow her dreams. Lizzie is a southern charmer full of SC low country flavor, and The Eyes Have it by Julie Allan is an enjoyable story of loss and love and lots of laugher. I recommend it for a glimpse into the multidimensional nature of the southern woman and as an enjoyable tale of creating a new path in middle age. It’s not so much a story about having a mid-life crisis as it is following a woman along a mid-life change of plans. It’s just like a southern woman to make lemonade when life gives you lemons! I look forward to reading Lizzie’s next journey, and in the meantime I wish there was a real Biscuit Box restaurant.
I would hesitate to read Allen's work again. She hurries her character & story development. The idea the aunt and Lizzy would react to the uncle's death with those passing references on how bad they felt just seemed lack of writing skills and insight into character development. The relationship with Bennett didn't seem a natural flow and like the other details seemed hurried over. The other men she dated seemed like cartoon characters and not at at all realistic. The setting details were okay , Allen needs to go back to Creative WRT 101. Should have been a .99 special!
